Just a space for thoughts of mine that I expect nobody will read or care about. I enjoy collating them, anyway.
The following is a collection of papers that I've found to be very accessible for those getting to grips with statistical movement ecology. Basically a dud at the moment, I'll be building this page gradually.
1) Statistical modelling of individual animal movement: an overview of key methods and a discussion of practical challenges
This paper is written for 'ecologically minded statisticians', but is fairly accessible for all.
The theory behind the the discrete-time Hidden Markov model (HMM) or State Space model (SSM) is covered, and it explains the 'forward algorithm' very well. The continuous-time inference serves as a reasonably brief overview, but it does explain continuous-time Markov chains well.
