The origin of the nickname 'Spike' for Poolsbrook, a small ex-mining village in Derbyshire.

I was born and raised in the ex-mining village turned council estate of Poolsbrook, a small semi-rural settlement near Chesterfield. For generations, in a tradition that doesn't seem to be dying off, locals have always referred to this place as 'Spike'. However, the reason for this has ostensibly been lost through the ages... until now! We believe we have found the source of this peculiar nickname (hint: it's an old Irish prison).
