WHRO Public Media is a nonprofit, community-owned public media station serving Eastern Virginia. It produces and broadcasts educational, cultural, and informational content through television, radio, and digital platforms. WHRO is known for its commitment to lifelong learning, arts coverage, and locally focused programming.
Internship Title and Duties
Title: Summer Production and Media Operations Intern
Duties: Assisted in television and radio production, engineering, and master control operations. Supported event coordination, live broadcast execution, and post-production editing.
Tasks and Expectations
I was expected to actively participate across departments, demonstrate flexibility, communicate effectively with team members, and complete assigned tasks on schedule. Responsibilities included technical support during live broadcasts, setup and breakdown for remote events, editing and producing content, and shadowing professional staff to understand workflow processes.
Projects and Their Impact
PBS Curate Feature: Co-produced and edited a segment featuring artist Walker Babington, enhancing my technical editing skills and contributing to WHRO’s arts programming.
Juneteenth Remote Event: Assisted with setup and technical operations, ensuring smooth event coverage for the community.
Channel Operations: Supported PBS and PBS Kids master control, contributing to uninterrupted broadcasting and quality assurance.
These projects expanded my hands-on production experience and gave me insight into the fast-paced world of public media.
Review of Internship Processes
Onboarding was clear and well-organized, providing an overview of WHRO’s mission, workflows, and safety procedures. Training was hands-on, with direct mentorship from experienced staff. Communication was consistent and collaborative, with team members readily offering guidance and feedback.
