The Financial Literacy and Education Commission believes that there are five key aspects to financial literacy: earn, spend, save and invest, borrow, and protect. It is important that individuals develop sound financial skills in life. Understanding your paycheck, living within your means, paying bills, saving for retirement, and using credit cards responsibly are all examples of financial literacy.
There are three main credit reporting bureaus: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian. These reporting bureaus use your credit history to determine a credit score. Your credit history is determined in part by your ability to pay bills on time and how much debt you carry on credit cards and loans. These aspects, plus others, determine your credit score.
Each year you are legally entitled to receive one free credit report from each of the three credit reporting bureaus. You can request all of them at one time or spread them out throughout the year to periodically check your credit report for any issues.

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau aims to make consumer financial markets work for consumers, responsible providers, and the economy as a whole. They protect consumers from unfair, deceptive, or abusive practices and take action against companies that break the law. They arm people with the information, steps, and tools that they need to make smart financial decisions.
