General reference books are almanacs, dictionary, atlas, yearbooks, thesaurus, encyclopedia, biography, quotation books, indexes, directories, textbooks, handbooks, etc. These items are commonly not taken out for home reading as they are only “referred to when needed,” thus these items are always available for use in the library.
Collections in this section are books that can be borrowed, renewed, or reserved, providing maximum service to the library users. General circulation books may be borrowed for a maximum of three days and be renewed for a maximum of three consecutive times Students are entitled to borrow a maximum of only three books at a time, either circulation books or in combination with the reserved book.
Books are considered reserved due to the number of copies that are available, the quantity of demand for a specific title, request of a student-researcher and/or by a faculty member of the Asian Institute of Maritime Studies (AIMS).

Serials are publications in the form of a “series’ which includes magazines, newspapers, and journals both current and past issues in bound volumes. The Center for Library, Archieves and Museum has more than sufficiently complied with local and foreign journal requirements, providing professional journals for every curriculum offering. Serials may be photocopied but are for in-house use only. Although Journals/ Serials that have been bound are already considered as books and have become part of the general circulation, their use is still limited for in-house only.
Vertical files are collections of resource materials that are either pamphlets, clippings from periodicals, mounted photographs, or documentation.
Research works and theses are available for use in the library only and are not allowed to be photocopied.
Cartographic materials are “spatial data presented graphically in the form of maps, atlases, globes, and three-dimensional maps and terrain models.”
Maps, charts, and globes may be borrowed for use inside the classroom during class hours as required by subject teachers for reporting.
The Center For Library, Archieves and Museum maintains a total of 13 computer units - 3 computer units for the personnel of the Library Department and 34 computer units for student’s use and for the Library Department’s OPAC (Online Public Access Cataloging), OLMS (Online Library Management System, e-journals (electronic journals), and Internet searches using duly recognized search engines such as Yahoo and Google.
