Zora Neale Hurston was one of the most important and celebrated figures to emerge from the Harlem Renaissance. Outspoken, spirited and gifted, Ms. Hurston was the most prolific African-American woman writer of the 1930's. Her most famous work is the novel, "Their Eyes Were Watching God." Interest in the nearly-forgotten Hurston was renewed beginning in the 1970s when Alice Walker sought out Hurston's obscure grave site and wrote a famous appreciation for the author.
The original production featured Elizabeth Van Dyke and Tim Johnson with direction by Handman. It garnered three Audelco Awards for Excellence in Black Theatre: one for the production, one for Van Dyke, and one for Handman. Zora is a theatrical biography of her life written by Laurence Holder, this performance brings to life her story.
