One of the readings that resonated with me was “The Ones Who Stay and Fight" because it had many underlying themes related to modern society. I remember that during the discussion our group talked about the difference between the society in "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" vs the one in “The Ones Who Stay and Fight." Both societies are not perfect. In "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas," the community thrives and is happy at the cost of a child's suffering. While this is upsetting, it can be argued that it is almost like the society in “The Ones Who Stay and Fight." In “The Ones Who Stay and Fight" they are supposed to be a perfect society, yet those who have opposing beliefs are murdered to preserve the values of the society. I believe that a common theme in both stories is that an ideal society can only exist at the cost of other things.
“The Ones Who Stay and Fight" is not a perfect society because those who have other beliefs are immediately killed. This story reminds me of the novel 1984 by George Orwell because all citizens are forced to believe in the same values and those who don't are immediately taken away. Like in 1984, the society in “The Ones Who Stay and Fight" may seem perfect but it's really not.
One in-class activity that resonated with me was when we had three guest speakers talk about their journey. The reason that this in-class activity resonated with me was because I gained lots of valuable advice that I will remember for the rest of my career. Two of the panelists decided to do something that was different than engineering. For example, I remember that one panelist went to work with the government in the energy sector. I thought that this was cool because they were doing something that did not go to school for, yet still connected with their major. I liked that they were able to expand their knowledge and be a part of different things other than engineering.
Additionally, I learned that engineers need to have communication skills. The last speaker talked about how he chose engineering because he is an introvert. I relate to that because I am also an introvert. However, he mentioned that in engineering, it is super important to be able to communicate and work with other people.
