Paperback A5 (5.83 x 8.27 in / 148 x 210 mm): Why Discover Schwa?
Speaking the English Language well requires that we read words not by the way they are spelled but by memorizing their sounds as recognized by traditional speakers in business or politics. The Invasion of French Soldiers to Britain added unique letter combinations that make reading Modern English a challenge for new Americans. One way to learn naturally is with a story and get feedback in pronuncing a sound that has many spellings. This sound, better known as the Schwa Phoneme in the Interna-tional Phonetic Alphabet, can dramatically help you speak to an audience wherever English is spoken. Look for the Schwa Phoneme in the words written by Sir Conan Doyle and look for your clue to speak with confidence.. The purpose of this guide is to teach the international speaker how to pronounce a key sound in the English language represented as [ə] in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA), and known as “schwa”. Speakers who learn English as a second language can dramatically progress towards native fluency if they learn to detect the presence of this sound in words. It is difficult for students who have never been instructed to detect this sound (or phoneme), because it can be represented by no less than five different letters of the English alphabet.

The author is a resident of Virginia and influenced by George Washington, "a sensible, intelligent young man who was familiar with the wilderness," to uncover the civilizing influences that made the Commonwealth, while mindful of the failed attempts by Colonial Governors to diversify the economy.
