The Disability and Identity Photovoice Project

Goal of the Project

The goal of this project is to increase personal and campus wide conversations around the college student and faculty and staff members experiences of the intersection of their disability identity with other identities.

Project Overview

This project explored the methods of powerful storytelling through photography, captions and lighting. Guest speakers have covered topics on photography and ethics, entrepreneurship and intersectionality and so much more. Eight UNC Charlotte students, faculty and staff members explored their lived experiences as people with disabilities through photography. Faculty and staff members explored how their gender, socioeconomic status and body image intersect with their disability. Students explored how having disabilities affects being a college student and impacts their role as a family member.

What is Photovoice?
