No, we're not talking about something rotting. Wrong kind of decomposition.
In computational thinking, decomposition means breaking a complex problem or task into smaller, more manageable parts.
Instead of trying to solve everything at once, we ask:
What smaller things need to happen for me to solve the bigger problem?
Imagine someone tells you: Organise a birthday party.
That's a fairly big task. But you probably wouldn't try to do everything simultaneously. You would naturally begin breaking it down:
Each of these can then be dealt with separately.
And some can be broken down even further. "Plan the food", for example, might involve deciding what to serve, checking dietary requirements, buying ingredients and preparing everything.
The original problem hasn't changed. You've simply made it easier to manage.
Think about when children have to get ready for school...
Getting ready for school is something most young children already understand, which makes it a simple way to introduce decomposition.
Start with the big task: “Get ready for school.” Ask the child, “What smaller things do we need to do before we are ready?”
Together, break the task into smaller parts such as get dressed, eat breakfast, brush your teeth, pack your school bag and put on your shoes. You can then take one of these smaller tasks, such as packing a school bag, and break it down even further. Through this activity, children begin to understand that a big task can be made easier by breaking it into smaller, more manageable parts.
They do not need to know the word decomposition yet. What matters is that they are learning to think by breaking problems down.
