Why a search engine isn't your best option
In our world, the internet is easily accessible at all times and in many ways. All of our students have a Chromebook issued by the school. Most of you have cell phones with internet access. And almost everybody in our school (teachers and students alike!) have used a search engine like Google to find answers to questions. And that's fine...until you need to do academic/scholarly research.
Google is probably one of the most popular search engines. However, have you and a friend ever searched for the exact same topic? There is a possibility that you can get different responses to the same question, simply because your browsing history and habits are different. Google bases its results on relevance to your search, but also your history; it also includes ads based on your search, and the more a company pays Google, the higher their ad is on the page, regardless of the relevance.
So, what is scholarly research?
Watch the video from Modern Librarian Memoirs below to get a better understand of what scholarly research is and why search engines aren't you best option. While this video is aimed at college students, all of us can learn from it.
