Our students are pros at digital communication, at least in certain areas. All of them use texting, social media, etc. frequently, and often better than most of the adults in their lives.
However, how many of you have gotten an email, where the entire message in the subject line? How many of our students don't know how to write a professional email?
Also, how many of them are aware of the digital footprint they leave behind when they post, sign up for mailing lists, or like/follow on social media? How many teachers are aware of this?
CYBERBULLYING
let's talk cyberbullying. It's become a major issue in today's interconnected society, but especially with teenagers. We all know a student or a friend who has been affected by cyberbullying.
The Cyberbullying Research Center has compiled numerous resources that can be used to help students and teachers identify cyberbullying.
NETIQUETTE
While it's aimed at younger students, WebWise's digital communication page is a good resource to share with our students to make sure they understand safety and "netiquette".
For your students, it may be helpful to share your classroom rules on communication. Here's a video that may be useful for the beginning of the semester, just to give your students a quick run down of professional communication.
