According to Dictionary.com, A digital citizen is .... "a person who develops the skills and knowledge to effectively use the Internet and other digital technology, especially in order to participate responsibly in social and civic activities"
With more and more schools implementing either a one-to-one technology policy or BYOD (Bring your own device), technology has become a part of a students day to day life in the classroom.
The gap of what students do on their devices versus what they are capable of is astounding. Also, many students do not realize the footprint they leave and the permanance of many of the things they post on the internet. Finally, the internet offers students the best resources of information. If we do not know how to best access, analyze, and cite that information, we are not using our resources to their potential.
In the following video by Common Sense Media, different educators discuss the several reasons why digital citizen is an essential concept to be taught to the next generation.

3.Digital Communication - As digital citizens, we are able to communicate with a wider range of people around the world and in several different forms (e-mail, instant messaging, cell phones, video chat, etc). With this, digital citizens needs to learn to make wise decisions when communicating.
4. Digital Literacy - Many different types of technology remain that are not being used in schools. There is a multitude of ways that technology is being used across all occupation fields. Digital Citizens need exposure and need to be taught to use all that the digital world has to offer that could be implemented into jobs.
5. Digital Etiquette - Before using technology, digital citizens need to learn appropriate conduct for using technology.
6. Digital Law - Digital Citizens need to be aware of what actions online can be deemed unethical. Examples of unethical digital acts include “Hacking into others information, downloading illegal music, plagiarizing, creating destructive worms, viruses or creating Trojan Horses, sending spam, or stealing anyone’s identify or property is unethical.”
7. Digital Rights and Responsibilities - The rights of digital citizens are that they have the right to privacy and speech. The responsibilities of digital citizens are that they must help show how technology can most appropriately be used.
8.Digital Help and Wellness - There can be dangers to users health if they are not educated. Digital citizens need to be educated on internet addiction, as well as eye safety or repetitive stress syndrome.
9. Digital Security - There are many dangers to the internet and it is important for digital users to make sure that they are protected. This could be through virus protection, backups of data, and surge control of our equipment
We have the ability to do good or bad with the technology resources we have in the 21st century. Here, Common Sense Media, shows how digital communication can be used positively or negatively.
