Slides Translator

Teacher Notes:

Slides Translator is a Google Slides extension. Schools do have to pay to be able to use this extension.

Student Uses:

  • Multi-language learners can use the Slides Translator extension to translate any text they need in a Google Slides presentation.

  • Students can see the English and their home language side by side (using the sidebar feature)

  • Students can use the voice typing feature to type in their native language.

        • Voice typing helps students to document their thoughts

        • Students can later translate their text to English (or any other language)

        • Students can see side-by-side translation without context switching

        • Providing a more inclusive environment: Students can collaborate with other students who are multilingual learners. (Students are able to translate content for group activities)

  • Students can listen to the text being read aloud to them in their native language through the read aloud feature

        • Provides accessibility and UDL (Universal Design for Learning)

Teacher Uses:

  • Teachers can translate text for different languages with only click.

  • Slides Translator (mostly) maintains the original slide formatting

  • Teachers can use examples to share with the whole class to show how learning looks like for other students.

4Cs of 21st century learning

  • Collaboration:

      • Since Slides Translator is an extension on Google Slides, students can still collaborate and work on the same presentation as a group.

  • Communication:

      • Having the option for using voice or typing to document ideas makes it easier for ELL students to communicate their thoughts.

  • Critical thinking:

      • Showing students a text in English and another language side by side (or having students do this independently) can lead students to look for cognates, analyze text structure and alphabets.

VARK (For Students)

  • Audio component:

      • Slides Translator engages auditory learners, as it can read the content in Google Slides aloud to students in English or their home language. Slides Translator also supports students who learn by writing, as they can can write responses in their home language to reflect on content and to share their learning. (The teacher can use Slides Translator to view students' responses in English)

  • Reading/writing component:

      • Slides Translator helps students (especially newcomers) who learn by reading text, as they can can read the translated text or audio to learn the content.
