Google Translate

Teacher Notes:

Use Google Translate to translate:

    • Words, phrases or sentences

    • Documents or PDFs

    • Images

        • Teachers can also take a screenshot of an instructional resource and upload the image to translate to a student's home language

    • Entire websites

        • Type in the URL of a website in Google Translate and select the language you would like to use. Click on the new link and the website will open to the student's native language.

    • Translate by voice

        • Teacher Tip: Steps to translating whole class instruction, lectures or reminders for newcomer students:

  1. Turn on the classroom projector

  2. Open Google Translate

  3. Click on the microphone icon and select a student's home language

*Remember to project voice, enunciate and speak slowly while sharing instruction (Teachers can also wear a mic)

  • As the teacher speaks, his/her device will pick up the words and translate it real time to a student's home language. ELL students will be able to see the translation of the teacher's instruction on the screen. (If there are multiple students who speak different languages, they can also use step #2-3 through their personal device)

  • Teachers can teach or demonstrate the steps to newcomer students for how to use Google Translate on their personal digital device so that they can use this tool independently during any class.
