Having new technology in the classroom means having new rules to make sure students and devices are protected. The most important thing for students to remember when using technology in the classroom is to wait for the teacher's instruction before doing anything on their devices.
Different teachers have specific rules for their own classrooms, but below are some of the basic rules and procedures that could benefit any classroom using technology.
1. No playing on devices. Only visit sites approved by the teacher.
2. Never give out personal information over a device.
3. Do not share your password to your device with anyone.
4. Do not eat or drink around devices to prevent damage.
5. Ask before downloading anything on a device.
6. Be gentle with devices, especially if they are not personally yours.
7. Tell your teacher immediately if you see something that makes you uncomfortable.
8. Make sure your work space/device is in the same condition you found it when you leave.
9. Do not distract others while devices are being used. Eyes on your own screen.
10. Have fun, be safe, and pay attention to the teacher.
Here are some basic rules and procedures for using computers in the classroom. This could also apply to using tablets and cell phones.
"The impact that technology has had on today’s schools has been quite significant. This widespread adoption of technology has completely changed how teachers teach and students learn. Teachers are learning how to teach with emerging technologies (tablets, iPads, Smart Boards, digital cameras, computers), while students are using advanced technology to shape how they learn. By embracing and integrating technology in the classroom, we are setting our students up for a successful life outside of school" (Cox, 2015)
While there are many benefits to using technology in the classroom today, the true potential of using technology cannot be met if students are not learning how to properly and safely use their devices. In order for learning to take place in a technology based classroom, new rules and procedures must be put into place so that technology and the students using the technology will be protected.
