We got this Avocado ECO Mattress after a customer dropped it off saying it felt like they were basically sleeping right on top of the springs. Not really firm in a good way, not supportive in a nice balanced way, more like the cushioning just kind of vanished. So we did what we usually do, grabbed tools, unzipped it, and tore the whole thing apart just to see what is actually going on inside
From the outside it looks pretty clean and simple. The cover is organic cotton mixed with wool and it has that light earthy smell like it is trying really hard to be natural and probably costs more than it looks. It feels soft enough to the touch but it is not thick or padded. More like a thin layer sitting on top than anything that actually gives you real cushioning. Already you can kind of tell where this is going
Once you get inside, you hit the comfort layer which is a 2 inch slab of Dunlop latex around D65 density. This is where things feel very firm and very straightforward. You press into it and it pushes right back almost immediately. There is not much sink, not much contouring. It just rebounds like a dense rubber block. We kept pressing it thinking there has to be something softer in there but honestly there really is not
Below that is the main support system and it is all pocketed coils. Individually wrapped springs packed pretty tight with reinforced edges they call quantum edge which sounds fancy but it is really just stronger sides so you do not feel like you are sliding off. We did some coil testing and weight loading and everything came out consistent. It is stable and supportive but definitely not soft or plush
Instead of glue holding everything together they use hog rings. It is very mechanical and actually kind of interesting to see. Everything is clipped and locked into place which is good for durability but also makes the mattress feel more responsive. Maybe even a bit too lively depending on what you like
After seeing it all opened up the customer complaint actually makes total sense. This mattress is not trying to be soft or cloud like at all. It is more like here is structure here is support and that is it. If you like firm beds you will probably be fine with it. If you do not you might end up getting a very direct reminder of every spring underneath you at night
