Revisiting Patterns in Longer Words (long u, long o, long oo):
Memory Concentration:
To set up: Students write their spelling words onto cards. First, they look for cards within their list that already match (i.e. follow the same spelling pattern). Then they think of more words to write on the cards in order to make sure each word has a match. If there are any oddballs that they can't match up, then they can be left out of the game.
Example: Consonant Blends with r, l, s
spin spell
clap clam
swim swing
last test
skin skunk
drag drink
just must
slip sling
branch bring
flower flute
To play: Students mix up and flip over the cards. The cards get set up in neat rows and columns. The first student flips over two cards. If they match they take them for a point and go again. If they don't match they try to remember what words they were and flip them back over. The remaining student(s) go next and follow the same rules until all matches are made.
Ninja e: Powerful and Silent
To play: Put the cards in the middle. Student rolls the die. They move their piece that many places. They pick a card and read it aloud. They record the
word on their sheet in the first column. Then they add the ninja e to it and tell their group the new word and record it in the second column. The first one to the ninja e at the end wins.

Tic-Tac-Toe

Slap Jack-Two Person Game
Write the students' target words down on cards. 52 word cards would be ideal. Each player gets half the deck. They each throw a card face up into the center at the same time. If the spelling pattern on the pair of cards matches the first player to slap it keeps the pair for a point. If the spelling pattern doesn't match and it gets slapped by accident the opposing player keeps the cards for a point. The player with the most points wins.
