A word ladder is a game-like activity where students follow clues to change one word into the next. This activity gives the brain practice with detecting patterns in words and develops Tier 3 vocabulary (i.e., consonant, blend, digraph, etc.). This will help with spelling, decoding, and vocabulary.
Tim Rasinski has published several workbooks of Word Ladders through Scholastic, which are excellent. I took his idea and created my own word ladders using the patterns and spelling words from Houghton-Mifflin Harcourt Journeys.
Directions: Start at the bottom. Have students read and trace the beginning word. Move up one rung. Read the meaning clue and then follow the directions to transform the first word into the second word. In this case the child would change the blend in "flag" to make "drag", which matches the meaning clue "to pull along on the floor." Continue to the next rung. Read the meaning and phonics clues. On the second rung the child would change the blend in "drag" to a single consonant to make "lag", which means to fall behind. Continue moving up the rungs until the ladder is complete.
*NOTE: If the box around the clue is BOLD the target word is a spelling word.*
If the word ladders don't load properly give your page a refresh. There should be no empty spaces on the page. I'm working on a fix. I think it's too overloaded with files. :)
