Photogrammetry: Pipeline Automation

Our team built rig with 20 cameras to capture photos of actors, athletes, clothing and anything else that should have a 3D virtual representation. The entire process of photogrammetry is well known. Here, I want to highlight only the parts where I gave a technical contribution.

Between capturing photos and building 3D models, there are many steps related to image processing. It was in this area that I was able to help to speed up the pipeline by automatizing some tasks and reducing the human effort of others.

One of the tasks was to segment the background of the main image target. This was a significant acceleration, since manual segmentation was slow and tedious work. One person would take up to one day to segment all images for a single 3D model. This time was reduced to less than one minute.

Another improvement was made for color calibration. The only requirement was to have a color matching chart captured on one of the images and the software would calibrate all images accordingly.
