The Walcker-Tschannun Organ

Christ Church Lausanne

The pipes in the picture are some of the oldest examples of the free reed Oboe stop made by the German organ builder E.F. Walcker.

These were installed in the organ at Christ Church Lausanne in 1882. Several ranks of free reed pipes with wooden boots were made by Walcker for their organ in the Votive Kirche in Vienna which was built between 1875 and 1878, so it is possible that the Lausanne oboe is the second oldest in the world.

The famous Walcker organ in the Cathedral in Riga also contains similar pipes, but dates to 1883.

Any information out there? Are you secretly hiding away an even older free reed oboe stop?

Let me know.
