Christ Church, Lausanne

The facade of the original Walcker Organ is quite a rare surviving example of the companies production during the 1870's and has two dragons at each corner.

The original 1878 specification according to Walcker's records was for a 2 manual organ with only 6 stops:

Manual I

Principal 8'

Flauto Amabilé 8'

Flauto 4'

Manual II

Salicional 8'

Lieblich gedeckt 8'

Pedal

Sousbasse 16'

The organ was enlarged shortly before the visit of Queen Victoria's grandsons in 1882 to the following specification:

Manual I

Principal 8'

Bourdon 16'

Gambe 8'

Bourdon 8'

Salicional 8'

Prestant 4'

Mixture III

Manual II

Oboe 8'

Flute 8'

Flute 4'

Pedal

Soubasse 16'

During the 1924 enlargement by Tschanun the mixture and Principal 8' were incorporated in the Swell and Great of the new organ, the original Principal 4' was moved down an octave and a new first octave of pipes made. The Mixture was replaced by a Salicional 8' and it is possible that the bourdon 8' was moved to the Great.

The new Walcker Choir Organ playable from the third manual of the Tschanun organ was then:

Principal 8'

Salicional 8'

Gambe 8'

Bourdon 16'

Flute 8'

Flute 4'

Oboe 8'

The new Great was:

Open Diapason 8'

Principal 8'

Contra Salicional 16'

Salicional 8'

Bourdon 8'

Flute 4'

Principal 4'

The Swell was divided into two divisions, one on either side of the chancel:

South transept:

Flute harmonique 8'

Gambette 4'

Plein Jeu III

Basson 16'

Trompette 8'

North transept above and behind the Walcker Choir organ:

Bourdon 8'

Voix Celeste II 8'

Nasard 22/3'

Picollo 2'

Tierce 13/5'

Voix Humaine 8'

The pedal organ consisted of:

Sousbasse 16'

Basse Ouverte 16'

Basse 8'

Basson 16'

Welcome to the curious world of tubular pneumatic action. This example from 1924 has around 5 km of 'compo' tubing transmitting information from the keys to the leather pouches that open the pipe valves at almost the speed of sound .
