After taking the quiz, my results said I’m fairly reliant on social media, which feels accurate. I’m not on my phone all day, but I do catch myself opening apps out of habit without really thinking about it. Most of my scrolling happens when I’m bored or just trying to relax. Seeing the result made me realize that even when it doesn’t feel like a lot, social media still takes up more of my time than I notice. It definitely made me more aware of how often I scroll without a real reason.
One statistic that stood out to me was that 64% of Americans say social media has a mostly negative effect on the direction of the U.S. That number is pretty high, but it honestly makes sense. Social media can be fun, but it also makes it really easy for negativity, misinformation, and arguments to spread fast. I picked this statistic because it shows how something we use casually every day can actually influence people’s moods, opinions, and how society functions overall.
I think social media has a huge impact on society, and not all of it is good. It’s made it way easier to stay connected and informed, but it’s also made people more reactive and comfortable saying things they probably wouldn’t say in real life. A lot of the time it feels like everyone is comparing themselves, arguing, or consuming bad news nonstop, which can be mentally draining. I also notice how easy it is to get sucked into scrolling without even realizing how much time has passed. Social media isn’t all bad, but I think how it’s designed makes it hard to use in a healthy way unless you’re really intentional.
Doing this project made me more aware of how much social media actually influences my habits and mindset, even when it feels “normal.” I learned that a lot of my scrolling is automatic and not always intentional. Looking at real data helped me realize that my experience isn’t just personal — a lot of people are feeling the same way. Overall, it made me think more critically about how and why I use social media.
