Course Compass – Privacy Policy
Effective date: September 27, 2026
This privacy policy applies to the Android app "Course Compass" (package: com.coursecompass), published on Google Play by the developer diamond-dave ("we", "us"). Contact: davedvlee@gmail.com
1. Location
Location permission is optional. If you allow it, Course Compass uses your device's location only while the app is on screen. It is used to show your coordinates and altitude, to calculate magnetic declination for True North, and to show GPS course direction on devices without a compass sensor.
Location is processed on your device. We never store it, and the app never sends it off the device. Location updates stop when you leave the app, even when background updates are turned on.
2. Data stored on your device
Your settings (such as distance and altitude units and True North) are stored only on your device. So are the counters the app uses to decide when to ask for a review: the number of launches, the first launch date, and when a review was last requested. This data is deleted when you uninstall the app or clear its data.
3. Data collected by third-party services
The app uses the following Google services, which collect data under their own policies:
- Firebase Crashlytics: crash and error reports. These include the error details, device model, Android version, app version, installation identifiers, your app settings, and a short log of app events before the error (for example, which screen was open or whether location permission was granted).
- Firebase Analytics: app usage events (for example, first open, sessions, and which screens you view), your app settings (units, True North, coordinates display, background updates, and vibration), device and app information, and an app instance identifier. Google may use your IP address to estimate your country or region. This is not your device location.
- Google Play In-App Review: the review screen is shown by Google Play. We do not receive your rating or review through the app.
We use this data to fix crashes and errors and to understand how the app is used, so we can improve it.
The app shows no ads. It does not collect the advertising ID or the Android ID, and ad storage and ad personalization are turned off.
We do not sell personal data, and we do not share it with anyone for advertising. Data is encrypted in transit. Google may process it on servers outside your country.

4. Permissions
- Location (optional): see section 1.
- Notifications: to show the notification that is required while background updates are on.
- Foreground service: keeps the compass running in the background, only when you turn on background updates.
- Vibration: for the optional vibration feedback when your direction changes.
- Internet and network state: used by Firebase to send the data described in section 3.
5. Data retention and deletion
Crashlytics keeps crash and error reports for 90 days. Analytics data linked to an app instance identifier is kept for no longer than 14 months.
The data in section 3 is not linked to your name, email address, or Google account. To ask us to delete it, email davedvlee@gmail.com and we will help as far as we are able to identify it. Uninstalling the app stops all collection and removes the data stored on your device.
6. Children's privacy
Course Compass is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
7. Changes to this privacy policy
We may update this policy. We will post changes on this page and update the effective date above.
