Mostly paintings and photos of statues. Many are not included for copyright reasons, but I strongly recommend checking out johandewitt.nl for some fantastic illustrations by Mr. Van Tol.
The subtle smile? The relaxed yet dignified hand placement? It’s like he’s saying, “Yes, I’m brilliant, and yes, I know it, but I’ll still hear you out.”
Apparently this is in every Dutch history textbook?
Cornelis: (lying back, raising an eyebrow)
"Johan... what are you doing? I'm the one in prison, and yet you're the one posing like it's a royal portrait."
Johan: (adjusting his cape, looking mildly offended)
"I'm showing solidarity, Cornels. And grace. And composure."
Cornelis: (deadpan)
"You're showing your leg."
What are you both doing??? Why are you just standing there??? WHY IS EVERYONE SO CALM???
Let’s Paint the Scene: Swan-Like Gasp Edition
The moment the mob kicks down the door:
Cornelis, already in bed, clutching his chest: “Oh no, Johan! The mob is here! How dreadful!”
Johan, putting a hand over his heart, his voice trembling with shock: “This cannot be!”
Both brothers exchange a single meaningful look. And then, as if choreographed: SIMULTANEOUS FAINTING.
Cornelis flops backwards onto the bed, while Johan collapses gracefully onto the floor in true swan fashion.
Oops, maybe eating you was a bad idea. Here's a statue right next to where we ate you and where your tongue and your brother's finger are still on display. Sorry!
Statue in Dordrecht(1918). Johan looks done with life and not larger than life, while Cornelis is silently judging you.
Very..."elongated". At least his hand looks great. Let's just pretend this didn't happen and move on.
