Q: What is this?
A: Think of it as an exploration—a web of interlinked "mini-essays," "analysis," and "satirical commentary" about Johan de Witt's story. Or, if you prefer...a little side project that spiraled wildly out of control. 

Q: What is this site trying to do?
A: The goal isn’t to offer a comprehensive overview or conclusive report; there are plenty of respectable historians out there doing great work, like the JohandeWitt.nl group. Instead, this site aims to spark curiosity and open up the many questions surrounding Johan de Witt. And if that doesn't work, at least we've all laughed at the absurdity of it all.

Q: Do you actually agree with everything you put on this site?
A: Yes and no. This is a lens through which ChatGPT and I have chosen to examine certain aspects of Johan de Witt and his story. It's not historical research and not everything can be taken literally, though I do fact-check and any misinformation is definitely unintentional. Sometimes I deliberately present contradictory perspectives in different articles. Remember: it's just a theory.

Q: Why all the jokes? Can you take nothing seriously?

While much of this site is laced with irreverent satire, it isn't about mockery; it's a tool to explore the contradictions of his life and legacy. Some pieces take a more serious approach, focusing on the facts and offering deeper analysis or reinterpretations of specific arguments—because let’s face it, Johan de Witt’s life was anything but simple. As for roasting, let's just call it humorous critique. I try to roast the ideas, not people. No actual disrespect intended.

My Role

• • Feed ChatGPT facts, half-formed theories, and ideas as they emerge.

  • Provide key observations, analysis, historical evidence and subjective perspectives. 

ChatGPT's Role

• • Expand on the analysis, connect scattered ideas, and generate creative suggestions(e.g. the occasional "swan-like gasp" moment). 

  • Provides alternative interpretions, frameworks, and stylistic tools(e.g. over-the-top humor and funny subheadings). 

Our Collaboration

Fragments from these conversations serve as the genesis of the articles, which I then expand and edit.

TLDR: a two-way, iterative process where ChatGPT and I bounce ideas back and forth. This would not be possible without AI.

This is a work in progress—a chaotic, collaborative inquiry. As new insights emerge and fresh perspectives on Johan de Witt’s life are uncovered(and as historians continue their fascinating research), the site will grow with new content. 

There’s simply too much to unpack, and we’re only scratching the surface. But this isn’t just about Johan de Witt.
