"You approach the edge of the forest and spot a clearing up ahead. In that clearing is a tower. And just as the prophecy foretold, you are here to rescue the princess from that tower. But be wary. There are tales of fearsome monsters who guard the tower’s captive. Tread carefully..."
Heroes and Monsters is a text-based fantasy RPG that I wrote and designed. The game disguises itself as your classic "Hero saves the Princess from her tower and has to fight a dragon" fairytale. Behind the curtain, though, the game tackles the harsh reality of mental health, specifically OCD. There are 15 total chapters to explore and over 114,000 words of unique dialogue, creating countless different ways to experience Heroes and Monsters! Designing and releasing this game was very cathartic for me; Before writing it, I never really knew how to talk about my struggles with OCD. This game allowed me a creative avenue to share this part of myself with the world, and to hopefully raise awareness about the realities of living with OCD (especially since there is so much stereotypical/inaccurate representation of OCD in the media). I hope that others who struggle with mental health can see through this game that they are not alone in their fight.
