Objective (why?)
The objective of our IoT project is to create a smart door lock, which will make the front door of our apartment more secure and convenient to access. Keys today are becoming less and less secure at protecting households. All someone would need to break into your home would be a picture of your key and a 3-D printer and they could recreate your house key and have access to your home.
Background (who? where?)
The door to our apartment requires a better locking system. Four people in the group will use the smart lock on a daily basis. So it will provide a lot of utility to make a door lock that is more convenient and secure.
Methodology (how? when?)
The brains of the smart lock will be a Raspberry Pi connecting to a motor that will turn the actual locking mechanism. To authenticate the person at the door, a connection to the house Wi-Fi can be used. That way only authenticated people will be able to access the locking mechanism.
Expected results (what?)
With this project we expect a more convenient door locking experience. It will also be more secure since a phone authentication key is much harder to copy than a physical key.
Costs (how much will it cost?)
The total cost of the project should be less than $100 since the two biggest costs are a Raspberry Pi and a small servo motor.
