For her it's a coping mechanism due to the unfortunate events of her past, wherein, she removes her most painful memories and has forgotten about her own brother, mother and protects herself and the idea of being "pure" and "righteous".

Nina is terrified that remembering her trauma will make her a monster. She needs to believe that she did not, in anyway, assist to any massacre her brother was involved in and if she did, the event left no scars behind. When she does remember what happened, she showcases an unusual violent side, in contrast with her naïve persona, even presenting suicidal tendencies.
Johan has largely impacted the way she sees the world, in his being protective of her. He makes Nina stay at home, between four walls with dolls and various drawings of them, while he goes out to reak havoc and jumpstart a new hellscape. Nina arrives to the conclusion, which mellows her more self-harming symptoms. Had she forgiven her brother for the atrocities then and sought help, maybe she could have prevented--perhaps avoided the problems they faced in the present. She cannot reconsile with her brother's need to attach himself to his memories and makes it a point to avoid him for her own sanity.
