How This Course Connects to Previous Healthcare Classes
This course is part of a progressive healthcare and pharmacy pathway that allows students to build knowledge and skills over time as they move from foundational concepts to more advanced pharmacy applications.
1. Introduction to Healthcare Science
In Introduction to Healthcare Science, students begin building a strong healthcare foundation with an early emphasis on pharmacy-related concepts. Students are introduced to healthcare careers, safety procedures, infection control, communication, professionalism, and legal/ethical responsibilities while also beginning to explore the role of medications, pharmacy settings, and the responsibilities of healthcare workers involved in medication safety and patient care.
2. Essentials of Healthcare
In Essentials of Healthcare, students expand their knowledge by focusing on body systems and therapeutic treatments. This course helps students understand how the body works, how diseases and conditions affect each system, and how treatments—including medications and other therapeutic interventions—are used to support health and healing. Students also strengthen their understanding of patient care skills, clinical procedures, healthcare math, documentation, and teamwork, all of which are essential for success in pharmacy-related careers.
3. Pharmacy Operations & Fundamentals / Pharmacy Technician
In Pharmacy Operations & Fundamentals (Pharmacy Technician), students apply what they learned in the previous courses to a more specialized focus on pharmacy practice and medication management. Students explore pharmacy operations, prescription processing, dosage calculations, medication safety, pharmacy law and regulations, drug classifications, and simulated pharmacy skills used in both retail and clinical settings. This course prepares students to think critically, work accurately, and build the technical and professional skills needed for future certification and career opportunities in pharmacy and healthcare.
This pathway allows students to move from foundational healthcare knowledge, to understanding therapeutic treatments of the body systems, and finally into specialized pharmacy operations and medication-focused training that supports college, certification, and career readiness.
Hands-On Learning Experience
This course is more than just classroom instruction—students will actively participate in hands-on, pharmacy-centered learning experiences that connect healthcare knowledge to real-world practice.
Students will engage in:
Simulated pharmacy lab activities
Medication measurement and dosage calculations
Prescription interpretation and pharmacy workflow practice
IV infusion rate and conversion practice
Role-play activities focused on patient and pharmacy communication
Medication safety and compliance simulations
Therapeutic treatment discussions connected to body systems
Real-world pharmacy operations and problem-solving scenarios
These experiences help students build confidence, strengthen critical thinking, and apply the professional skills needed in pharmacy and healthcare settings.
