Following her boyfriend’s suicide, Maya effectively becomes the main character in the show. Immediately following his death, she begins acting out of character, becoming increasingly provocative and risky. She expresses her feelings of not knowing if the decisions she makes are right or not. Eventually, she breaks down and seeks support in overcoming Cam’s death.
In Next Class, Maya is shown to be recovered. She is in a long-term relationship and has several close friends. Later more traumatic events transpire. As a result, she becomes withdrawn from her friends, her grades drop, she no longer experiences enjoyment in life. She thinks about death often. This leads her family and friends to worry about her, and she receives a depression diagnosis. This storyline ends with Maya attempting suicide, though she is luckily found and saved by two students. Following her attempt, she is shown working through her depression symptoms.
On the left, Maya is drunk at a party with strangers. On the right, she is experiencing an emotional breakdown related to Cam's death.
