Arctic haze over Denali in Alaska in the spring of 2008

Arctic Haze and Ozone Depletion

Joost de Gouw was involved with 2 studies performed in the International Polar Year in 2008:

  • ARCPAC: airborne measurements using the NOAA WP-3D research operated out of Fairbanks in Alaska
  • ICEALOT: ship-based measurement in the North Atlantic using the Woods Hole Research Vessel Knorr

During ARCPAC, there were frequent Arctic Haze episodes that were attributed to biomass burning emissions in Russia. During ICEALOT, the r/v Knorr sampled air masses that were depleted in ozone as a result of halogen chemistry. Using the Lagrangian model FLEXPART, these air masses could be traced back to the ice sheet that contained both first-year and multi-year sea ice.
