Math

Mathematics is a dynamic and exciting field that can provide students the opportunity to think creatively, apply their ingenuity, and collaboratively construct an enhanced understanding of the world through a new perspective. However, traditional mathematics instruction has often reduced mathematics to a set of procedures to be applied. This has in turn led to student disengagement from math and an overarching narrative around who “can” and “cannot” do mathematics, with students of color being disproportionately impacted in a negative way. Schools working in Math Instruction quads will:

  • Begin to unleash the dynamic nature of math by decolonizing mathematics instruction through both content (what is taught) and pedagogy (how the content is taught).

  • Expose the sources of mathematical intimidation for students and find ways to address them through an anti-racist lens, acknowledging that all students can do mathematics and providing them access through scaffolding that addresses their individual needs.

  • Present mathematical ideas in creative and experiential ways that both connect to students’ prior knowledge and provide them with new, stimulating experiences.
