What is happening on June 28 and why?
In 2020, young people organized in historic numbers to take back Congress and elect Joe Biden on a bold climate mandate. Our priorities then were clear as they are now: confront the twin crises of climate change and economic insecurity, root the solutions in racial justice, and put our politics on a path that makes a livable future possible.
We did our job, and delivered the new President a commanding victory. In 2021, it’s time for Joe Biden to do his. But instead of listening to our movement and our demands, President Biden has been negotiating with the GOP -- the same political elites who let our communities die from COVID-19 and encouraged white supremacists to storm the Capitol. Nothing good will come of these negotiations, and if they continue our generation stands to lose our best shot at passing the first pillar of the Green New Deal.
So it's time for our movement to do what we do best! Join us for a huge action in DC on Monday, June 28, to show Biden we won't let him get away with this. These are the demands we'll be taking to the Biden administration and Democrats in Congress as they work to pass this infrastructure package:
No Compromise, No Excuses. Democrats must take their power seriously and do what’s needed with or without the GOP.
Meet with the People Who Elected You. We demand that Biden set up a meeting with Varshini Prakash, Executive Director of Sunrise Movement, and other movement leaders to hear our demands on infrastructure and negotiate with us.
Fully Fund the Civilian Climate Corps. This moment demands bold action and a significant infrastructure package to stop climate change and create millions of good jobs in the process. That is why we need a fully funded Civilian Climate Corps to put over 1.5 million Americans to work in good paying union jobs while combating climate change and building a sustainable future for our generation – all while giving us hope for the future and changing how we see the government.
On June 4th, we delivered our demands loud and clear outside the White House. On June 28th, we’ll be back. Biden will either be celebrated for meeting our demands or we will once again hold him accountable to the young people that elected him.
The more people that can show up with us in DC on June 28, the better! Anyone is welcome to join us, whether this is the first action they are taking with Sunrise or whether they're an actions extraordinaire -- there will be roles and ways to participate for folks at all levels.
When thinking about who from your hub or friendship group you'd like to invite to the action, you should consider these things:
Making history. We're at a critical crossroads, where our movement could win the first pillar of the Green New Deal or lose our best shot -- likely for years. This is a make or break moment and by coming, you can be a part of it!
Transformative experience. People who come to this action will likely leave with renewed hope and fire to keep organizing at home.
Strengthening relationships. Travelling to and from out-of-state action with a crew of people is a guaranteed bonding experience! You'll make connections on this trip that you can keep building on at home.
Learn new skills. At this action you'll have opportunities to learn and shadow different roles, participate in a training and art build, and collect many more insights that will benefit your organizing at home.
More details are being figured out every day, and we'll share more information as it becomes available. The best way to ensure you're kept up to date is registering to come to the action here: smvmt.org/june28. However, there are some things we do know!
There will be a pre-action training that everyone should attend on Sunday night
The action itself will take place on Monday
A smart way to approach this is to make an effort to bring a small group of friends and make a trip out of it! Maybe you all catch the train together or drive together on the Friday; maybe you leave some time to come to the inevitable art build or to head to a museum. This action experience will be what you make of it, and it will be better with friends!
