It is widely believed that there are laws that govern what can and cannot be done with magic, and these laws are most easily broken down into three categories which we will explore further.
LOCAL
Laws created and enforced by cities or sovereign powers
CONDITIONAL
Based on experiences you've had, who you are, what you've done or learned etc.
UNIVERSAL
Laws that apply to all magic, everywhere.
Local laws on Earth, even in Dawngrove, are few and far between.
Humans are quite clueless about magic, and the only authorities you may find on magic will likely be in the the local monasteries, coven, or other such gatherings. Take caution if you wish to display your magic openly, not everyone approves.
Here are some examples of Fae laws of magic, from the Winter court:
It's seen as cruel to mess with animals using magic.
Trying to use the magic of the Shadow Court can get you banished.
To use magic to physically entrap is frowned upon, death is much kinder.
Humans are not to be taught magic by anyone of the Winter Court, and anyone caught can be exiled or killed on the spot. The Humans, if found, shall be eliminated.
Magic has many uses, it is a powerful energy that seems to have a mind of its own, and is easier to influence through certain elements and objects, at certain times, and by certain creatures.
The vast majority of high magic spells require the ability to channel a lot of magic and learn how to shape it, and humans are greatly limited in this regard. They often require help from an outside source. The common components for spells are Verbal, Somatic (gestures), and Materials.
Low magic is something most humans use. like rituals, meditations, and traditions. This magic is in practically everything that's done with concentration, even in small ways.
High magic is much more powerful and something that humans haven’t been practicing much, as the magic of their world is much more dispersed.
Some spell-casting requires rituals, which always take more time and concentration.
Magic can eventually be learned as a cantrip, which is magic that needs no preparation after a lot of practice, fixing the spell in your mind. It feels a lot like when you learn how to balance on a bicycle.
Some spells and rituals can be used any time and are contained within another object, either as a conduit, a potion, a trinket, a weapon, etc.
Humans that learn magic are normally half or partially Fae, or else they have a rare particular connection with it that is often fostered over many years. Usually it is some form of low magic.
Their teachers are often the writings of other humans, Fae, experimentation & life experience. There are places on earth that claim to teach magic, though you cannot learn from a single source.
Humans can naturally perform magic. Certain humans have a sensitivity towards it that often begins as an Ability.
Human practitioners of magic are not prevalent, even amongst those who perform witchcraft, there's only a small amount that connect to anything other than “low magic” (magic mostly affecting self, well-being, and perception). Humans can also gain connections to deities to use their gifts with more power and accuracy.
Other affinities are not well known...
It is apparent that there are limitations in regards to which schools of magic you can excel in, as when you work in a school of magic your influence over its "opposite" becomes weaker. This goes similarly for selected elements of magic.
(scroll further down for information on the schools of magic)
Some schools of magic can only be learned under particular circumstances. For example, necromancy is only accessible to those who have had d*ath experiences.
Magic requires a conduit
Spells can vary, some are written in a creature (often from the Otherworld) as an instinctual reaction to certain stimuli, others are sigils, some are chants or songs. A spell is essentially a path for magic to follow, and the ingredients and energies in it are how you shape it.
Magic doesn’t “vanish”, its not “used up”
Though someone or something can hoard its energy, if they have the means.
Magic has no alignment
It’s not good or evil, it’s how you use it- using it can’t make you a good or bad person, that’s your choice. It always is. That being said, often those who define it call “bad” magic shadow magic, or left hand magic, and “good” magic light magic or right hand magic.
Some magic can’t be altered.
Creating worlds, destroying realms, and creating living beings by anything less than a deity has not been heard of.
The universe has a certain order, and to ‘hack it’ takes a lot more than one human life, especially when theres little previous research to start your journey.
There is danger in performing unrefined spells.
If you try and use a powerful spell and don’t know how to disperse the energy safely when it goes wrong, you can create a lot of destruction. It can also affect your state of mind. It all depends how much energy is built up - and what kind of spell you were attempting.
