In May 2017, the RISE Student Board participated in a nationwide project called SCrAP (School Cafeteria Discards Assessment Project). The project, managed by the Environmental Research and Education Foundation, aims to collect data on school cafeteria food waste in order to learn about ways to reduce the $165 billion in food that is thrown away each year.
For one week, RISE members collaborated with Davis High School volunteers to weigh and approximate the volume of recycling bins (plastic, metal, & glass & organics) and trash at every recycling station on the Holmes Junior High School campus. This involved dumping out the contents of each bin and sorting the contents. The dimensions of the bins were measured and recorded, and the contents of each bin were weighed and photographed. We highly recommend your school participate in the SCrAP project. Click the link below to find out more about SCrAP.
