CRV Collection Project: Overview
Register for a sporting event at DHS and recruit volunteers from your club to supervise the collection of spectators’ CRV cans and bottles. RISE will provide the recycling containers; your club provides the trash bags so that you can take the CRV to be redeemed for cash. Finally, submit the redemption check to the DHS finance office to deposit the funds into your club account.
What is CRV?
CRV (California Redemption Value) is a monetary incentive to recycle aluminum cans and plastic bottles. Aluminum cans and plastic bottles marked with “CA CRV” or “CA CASH REFUND” can be redeemed at a local recycling center for 5 cents or 10 cents apiece, depending on the size. Large quantities are typically weighed and paid by the pound. Most soda, water, tea, coffee, Gatorade, and other beverage brands qualify for CRV. (For safety reasons, please do not collect CRV glass)
Why should I care?
The CRV collection program is twofold. First, it is an easy fundraiser for your club and is a great way to get involved in school events. Second, it helps raise awareness about recycling and prevents all those bottles and cans generated at events from going to the landfill. Raising funds and helping the environment - it’s the perfect combination!
Redemption Rules
All fluids must be removed (CRV is usually weighed to determine cash value)
Aluminum and plastic bottles must be separated (each has a different cash value)
Plastic bottles must have a label (the label ensures it is a CRV item)
Although CRV glass bottles can be redeemed, the potential for breakage is high. Therefore, to prevent injury to students, do not collect glass. It should be placed in the campus commingle carts (blue carts for plastic, metal, and glass)
White plastic should be separated from clear plastic – easily separated at redemption center
You may want to separate 24 oz. containers. (You can get 10 cents apiece for them if you have them hand-counted)
CRV Collection Project: The Collection Process for DHS
Step One
Forms A and the Sign Up Genius link can be found above. Please fill both out at least two days prior to the event.
Form A provides contact person/club information. Contact person is responsible for managing the collection process on the day of the event, i.e. volunteers, set-up, training, and ensuring recycling containers and materials are returned to the lockbox.
The Sign Up Genius is where you can sign up for a game or event. Only one representative from your club needs to fill it out.
Step Two
A few days before the event, you will be given the lock combination to the storage container. If you did not receive the combination, text @dhsrise to 81010. The storage container is located east of the stadium ticket office, along the fence.
Make sure you have the sporting event tickets for the volunteers who need them.
Step Three
On the day of the event, remove an equal number of blue Rubbermaid collection containers labeled “cans” and “plastic bottles” and an equal number of lids labeled “cans” and “plastic bottles” - remember, the collection containers will be placed in pairs (one container for aluminum cans and one for plastic bottles). We recommend two stations for events in the gym (place one station at each entrance) and at least three stations for the stadium (one at the entrance and two in or near the stands).
Remove one fluid bucket for each collection station you plan to set up.
Line each blue Rubbermaid container with a large plastic bag. Place the appropriate lid on each container.
Lock the storage container.
Step Four
Volunteers stand next to each station to help ensure items are placed in the appropriate containers and fluids are removed from the bottles/cans before they are dropped into the containers.
Step Five
Once the event is done, empty and rinse the fluid buckets. You can save a few water bottles to get this done, use the bathroom sink, or use the water key and map in the lockbox to locate a water spigot. Remove the trash bag with the CRV and lock up the recycling containers, lids, and rinsed fluid buckets. Redemption volunteer takes the bagged CRV to be redeemed.
If you are interested in registering your club for a specific sporting event to collect CRV as a fundraiser, please fill out Form A (below) and the Sign Up Genius before the day of the event.
If you have any questions, please email us at risestudentboard@gmail.com or
text @dhsrise to 81010 (Remind App)
Note: The above instructions were written in 2018. The Sign Up Genius link and Remind code are no longer valid. Students interested in reinstating the CRV Collection program are encouraged to create new sign up links using the platforms mentioned above or with alternate platforms. For more information about accessing the CRV shed, contact Katherine Hawkins at Holmes Junior High.
Proposed Shed Mural
The RSB recruited a Davis High School club, Art for Cure, to design and paint an environmentally-themed mural for the CRV lockbox located outside the Ron and Mary Brown stadium. Unfortunately, the mural was never completed as many of the club members graduated at the end of the 2018-19 school year. We hope to collaborate with another group to complete the mural in the near future!
