MENACHAP, CALIFORNIA. An incomprehensible event: every person in the audience of a high school play falls unconscious—every person but one. Using interviews with witnesses, loved ones, first responders, and the investigators pursuing the case, a theater ensemble brings the story of the strange event to life, documentary-style. But as the strands weave together into an increasingly dangerous web, it becomes clear that this phenomenon might not be entirely in the past. Unnerving, exhilarating, and wildly inventive, you've never walked into anything quite like Trap.

Director's Note
Stephen Gregg’s Trap has been a pleasure to explore with a talented and spirited cast and crew. Full of unique challenges, the play stitches together a wide range of interviews, recollections, and scenes, making it an exercise in world building. The play investigates the nature of fear and the human tendency to let our minds’ musings create sinister intentions traceable to the vestigial fears necessary for our species’ early survival. As Rickenoch Baynor says in the play, “When we emerged from the jungle, our capacity for worry didn’t go away; it just repurposed itself. So now instead of worrying about being eaten by a tiger, we worry about tomorrow’s math test.”
When we can intellectually understand the sometimes irrational source of our fears, we can convince ourselves that it is silly to let our fears get the best of us. And we can breathe easier. But as Trap explores, sometimes maybe we should be scared of the dark…
We hope you enjoy watching Trap just as much as we enjoyed creating it!
