Mean Girls

March 8, 9, 15, 16 @7pm

March 10, 17 @2pm

How fetch! After years in the making, Mean Girls: The Musical hits the stage with the favorite characters from the movie, powerful music, and timely pop culture and news references. Janis Ian and Damian Hubbard welcome the audience to their “Cautionary Tale”: Cady Heron is the new girl at North Shore High School in Chicago, desperate to fit in and find friends. Janis and Damian befriend the new girl, and when The Plastics set their sights on Cady, Janis convinces naive Cady to be their “friend” in order to bring down Queen Bee Regina George’s reign. Along the way, Cady loses herself, her friends, and her crush, all for the chance to be popular and loved. When dethroned Regina gets revenge by releasing the Burn Book, Cady is brought down and must mend her broken relationships with Janis, Aaron, and even Regina. With dynamic songs for young performers, Mean Girls is an anthem to friendship, loyalty, girl power, and being true to yourself. (Stage Agent)

DIRECTOR'S NOTE

With the recent release of the Mean Girls movie, it seemed like the perfect time to produce this musical at Davis High.  When the original movie came out 20 years ago, it resonated with audiences and couched themes of belonging in a clever and digestible format.  The original movie was inspired by Queen Bees and Wannabes: Helping Your Daughter Survive Cliques, Gossip, Boyfriends, and the New Realities of Girl World by Rosalind Wiseman.  Many of the observations Ms. Wiseman made in her 2002 book about the dynamics of meanness have sadly only been amplified in the world of social media, where rises and falls can occur lightning-fast, and sometimes with venomous cruelty.

Though this musical goes to dark places, as the opening song proclaims, “This is a cautionary tale.”  We hope that the exploration of meanness and Cady’s eventual ability to pull herself out a downward spiral can offer a ray of light, a reminder that even though there are many traps in adolescence, they are not destiny.

As you will see, this is a musical written more like a screenplay with quick cuts, and songs that span multiple locations.  Creating the flow and keeping our cast of nearly 40 singing, dancing and acting their way through its flow was a (mostly) joyous challenge.  We hope you enjoy watching Mean Girls as much as we enjoyed creating it!

Sincerely, Chad Fisk

SPECIAL THANKS

DHS Theater would like to extend its eternal gratitude to Gwyneth Bruch for being such an integral member of the DHS Theater community.

To our wonderful director, Chad Fisk: thank you for everything. Especially for the tables.

All of the thanks in the world to Eric Richardson and  Niels Larsen, because without you, how would we face the feat of flying practically every set piece?

Thank you to Shenandoah Kehoe for her mentorship and support that goes above and beyond in every way possible.

So many thanks  to Jennifer Nachmanoff for all the hours put in to to painting the beautiful set seen before you.

Thank you to Janet Sakona from Woodland High School, Tylar Traum, and James Cubbage, for loaning of costumes.

A huge thanks to Jim Rokop for taking the beautiful headshots displayed in the lobby.

Many thanks to Kyle Blewett and Alisa Clayton for designing and building the cheapest Transformers costumes possible.

To Andrew Clifton, for the stationary bike, to Mike Clayton, for the chandelier, to Jan Carma for the toilet seat, to DMTC for Africa, and to Douglass Middle School for the lion costume.

Finally, a big, BIG thank you to Krissy Schwerin and Kat Painter for taking on the musical direction and dance choreography for this show. This production would be entirely lost without them.
