100 years before podcasts were to become ubiquitous, Americans tuned in to their radios for news and entertainment. Radio plays got their start in 1920's United States. Often radio plays consisted of stage plays converted for sound recordings or popular vaudeville and Broadway acts, but these soon gave way for scripts especially suited to the medium of sound. Immersive radio dramas incorporate sound design and music in addition to the spoken word. In 1938, Orson Welles aired his famous "The War of the Worlds" radio drama. The production so expertly included ads and sound effects in its news-style reports that a number of listeners believed the fictional alien invasion report to be real. Today, with the popularity of podcasts, radio plays are making a comeback.
