Lesson 1

In Position A we have nothing special we can do in the rest of the board and as it is early in the game we need to think about moving the back checkers. So after 24/20, what next? We can hit on the 1-point, bring one down from the midpoint 13/8 or continue on with 20/14?

6/1* is a tempo move but we don't need that when there are better options. The other two moves are about the same and you can see that both have balance.

In Position B we have a similar type of dilemma, run out the back man, the tempo move of 24/20 or the much more aggressive looking 8/3* 13/9?

Here we have a stronger inner board and can hit on the 3-point. Now bringing down from the midpoint gives us lots of chances to cover the blot if we are not hit. It's a bold move.

Here are another couple of variations to try your hand at.

We've combined some of the features of each play into positions C and D to see what is important. In Position C we have a strong board but hitting on the 1-point is weak. The best option is to run 24/15.

In Position D black is much weaker with no extra inner board points made. We can slot the 20 point and bring one down 13/8 which gives us a nice balanced position and see what happens next. Running is almost as good though and it is not a mistake.
