Summary
Design Goal
To create a microgame to be part of a large collection on an arcade machine. The microgame can be 30 seconds long at most, and had to use a provided framework called MicroMix
Team chose to do several microgames as we felt the 30 second time limit was too long
Took heavy inspiration from WarioWare when designing our games
End result is 3 very short, very simple cat-themed microgames in a collection that rotates randomly through the three of them
Pet: press the primary button to pet the cat
Brush: use the joystick to guide the brush along the cat's fur
Smash: use the joystick to make the cat wind up it's arm and then knock the glass off the table
Work done on project
Organized ideas from team members, providing feedback to help keep a focus on the intent of the Design Week while still allowing their creativity to flourish
Created and managed a Discord that was used for communication, organization, and documentation sharing with the team both in-person and remotely
Handled documentation, creating channels that gathered the work done both in Discord and in Google Drive
Challenges
Team was originally 4 people, but one member fell sick early on, required reshuffling of design roles
Was overcame rather easily as the project had just started, so roles and workload hadn’t been cemented yet
Team communication sometimes flagged over Discord, resulting in missing deadlines for showing work
Was overcome by implementing additional check-ins (went from just a check-in at night and in the morning the next day to also having one in the afternoon)
Lessons learned
While remote working is more comfortable personally, working in-person is preferable as it eases communication
Implementing the standard methodology of game designing (researching, concepting, greyboxing, etc.) as early as possible helps establishing an efficient workflow for all team members involved
