Design Goal:
To make a game playground centered around one verb
Verb the team chose was "Ignore"
Resulted in a game where the player picks up to 3 items to preserve before causing time to advance. Objects that were ignored deteriorate with time, while picked objects remain the same
Work done on the project:
Created a narrative concept for the playground to theme the mechanic around (watching a childhood bedroom grow more dilapidated over time)
Coordinated and collaborated with the artists in-person and via Discord to brainstorm the objects that the player would interact with in the room
Created a script in Google Docs for a video briefly presenting our game and explaining some design choices in it
Challenges:
"Ignore" as a verb runs very close to "Observe", was a signficant challenge to design the theme of the playground around one without wholly invoking the other
Chose to focus on the negative connotation inherent to "Ignore" to create the stylistic choice of things decaying if ignored
Lessons learned:
When designing a mechanic for a game, it's important to also consider similar mechanics, both to draw reference from, and to use as a check of whether or not your system succeeds at what it is trying to do
