The competent teacher builds and maintains collaborative relationships to foster cognitive, linguistic, physical, and social and emotional development. This teacher works as a team member with professional colleagues, students, parents or guardians, and community members.
For my last Special Education class at Trinity, SPED420, we were given a fictional scenario and student along with a Trinity professor as their parent. In this we had to address a goal in the student's "IEP" and discuss as a team in how we can best support the student and possible alter the goal. In this assignment, I took initiative in taking notes to prepare before the meeting and took on the role of the Reading Specialist (due to us choosing a reading goal). I gave the "parent" a strategy I would like to use to help the student in their goal and the strategy had a visual to help in showing the "parent" what it would look like in reality.
The Knowledge Indicator I chose for this is 8I) which states "...understands the roles and the importance of including students with disabilities, as appropriate, and all team members in planning individualized education programs (i.e, IEP, IFSP, Section 504 Plan) for students with disabilities..." I belive that this standard is met in thsi mock IEP meeting because of the collaboration in which was involved in created and initiating the meeting. My group and I planned and prepared well for this without taking anything away or establishing plans without the "parent's" knowledge.
Below is a booklet of suggestions for a family in which we were helping for transition planning. As a class, the seven of us created different sections of this booklet. In this project, I took initiative in creating the template and starting off the groups. We emailed the booklet as each group finished their portion to finish with a completed plan for both our class assignment and the family. This was very interesting because we did not know the family personally, but they were real and we were creating something that was easier to look through and read for their child.
For this, I connected the Performance Indicator 8K) which states "...participated in collaborative decision-making and problem-solving with coleagues and other professionals to achieve success for all students..." This one is applicable because as a group we were helping each other and checking the work that each group contributed. This would not have been completed if we did not work as a team and communicate about what's going on.
