The competent teacher has in-depth understanding of content area knowledge that includes central concepts, methods of inquiry, structures of the disciplines, and content area literacy. The teacher creates meaningful learning experiences for each student based upon interactions among content area and pedagogical knowledge, and evidence-based practice.
I had the opportunity to collaborate with a professor at Trinity in making a presentation on Critical Consciousness. In this presentation, I was able to explain the concept, give examples, and provide ideas of how teachers can improve on this subject matter.
I connected this presentation into standard 2C) which states "...understands the cognitive processess associated with various kinds of learning (e.g., critical and creative thinking, problem-structuring and problem-solving, invention, memorization, and recall) and ensures attention to these learning processes so that students can master content standards..." I believe that in making a presentation, researching, and providing information about a way of teaching follows this standard.
A classmate and I created a project-based unit on the subject matter of 7th grade Social Studies. The goal behind this was to assist in the creation of well-aware, educated, and respectful future voters. We started the unit out with an SEL lesson based on debating in a way that shows your voice, but doesn't cause harm to other's voices. This PBU ended with a school-wide "election" in which everyone in the class participated and the school had the opportunity to vote.
This project-based unit is displayed by the standard of 2N) which states "...facilitates learning experiences that make connections to other content areas and to life experiences..." My classmate and I created this PBU for students to have a real experience in a controlled setting before they have to do the real experience in the real world. This was a simulation type of learning to help for the future.
