The competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.
In the Spring of 2022 I had the opportunity to write a Student Assessment Project (SAP) for my ENG288 class, which is a methods class for teaching English. I was able to use my Pre-Student teaching experiences and a student within it to complete this assignment. This gave me both the template of thinking how I can assess a student while also enforcing ideas of how I can better help their writing. For this assignment I was required to do a spelling inventory for the student (alongside some of his friends to ensure I didn't single anyone out), take a writing sample and create activities that could better help in the areas he struggled with slightly.
I can apply Knowledge Indicator 6G) which states "...understands how to design, select, modify, and evaluate a wide range of materials for the content areas and the reading needs of the student..." I believe this fits with my SAP in which I am able to assess where a students stands and modify or create acitvities to fit their needs. This is vital in ensuring each student is individually accounted for and given what is approapriate for their independent learning.
During Student Teaching I taught a unit on important black heroes for Black History Month (February). For this day's hero, we learned about Jackie Robinson. We watched a Youtube video on him, I did a read aloud of I am Jackie Robinson, we completed a timeline of facts as a class, and then students gave a sticky note fact for our wall. All of these activities in reading, watching, and doing things lead to them writing why he is a person we should know. In the bottom right image, a student who is typically lower in writing gave me a sample to share. They usually struggle with engaging in lessons and finding motivation to write, but since they are interested in baseball they did well and enjoyed the way the lesson was created and done. The student informed me that they enjoyed and learned most from the YouTube video and me showing visuals in the book. This encouraged me to continue doing multiple forms of learning and engaging the students in doing rather than just listening.
The Performance Indicator 6J) states "...selects, modifies, and uses a wide range of printed, visual, or auditory materials, and online resources appropriate to the content areas and the reading needs and levels of each student (including ELLs, and struggling and advanced readers)..." Not just having multiple forms of learning in this lesson plan, but also seeing growth in a struggling reader/writer is what really brought my attention to this indicator.
