As Editor-in-Chief of the Statesman's online division (https://lhsstatesman.com/), I make sure the website's layout is clean and its stories timely. I also strongly encourage staff writers to take their own photos. We diversify our digital content across a broad palette of designs, from slideshows and photo galleries to side-by-side comparisons. Below are just a few examples.
In this story about biopics, we used a layout consisting of clickable "chapters" (tickets) which led to a separate section of the story about the movie in question.
Often, the Statesman uses photo galleries of major school events to clearly communicate their details in a timely manner.
This is an example of a featured image from one of our stories reviewing a new local pizza shop, and as one scrolled through the page, the story's text would appear. The striking visual image that initially consists of just the pizza draws readers in.
We like to have fun with our featured images, and we generally encourage staff members to take or make their own.
On social media, the Statesman celebrates student, team and activity accomplishments while also promoting awareness of major school events and activities (Homecoming, tournaments, etc.). Our Instagram account has amassed over 700 followers.
We also occasionally post teasers or previews of soon-to-be-released or just-released articles to further bolster student engagement. At the beginning of the year, we created "meet the staff" posts wherein staff members introduced themselves. We also had "Instagram takeovers" where staff members would take over the Instagram account for a day and vlog their day, classes, work, etc. Now and more recently, we are creating "meet the school" posts wherein staff members interview students who haven't yet been featured in brief videos on Instagram.
The Statesman covered LHS's 2021 Homecoming Week (and has covered all others) extensively. We posted about winners on our website, released footage there and on social media and also covered parts of it live.
An example of a "meet the school" feature post on our Instagram featuring an aspiring filmmaker; we find these posts vital for connecting students with each other to create both a more robust publication and school community.
