It might sound trite, but a picture truly can tell a thousand words... often more. I've found that I particularly enjoy landscape shots both urban and rural, and they tend to fit with stories I write quite well. Here are few samples of photos I've taken for the Statesman that have been incorporated into stories:
Taken from the perspective of the stage at a political rally in January 2020; I told the rally's volunteers I was with a high school newspaper, and they allowed me to get on the stage behind the candidate. I used this in a story about the 2020 election from a local perspective.
Taken at Falls Park, Sioux Falls, early in the morning for an upcoming story about public transit.
A shot of downtown Sioux Falls in inclement weather for a story on improving the city's layout and sustainability.
A photo of the school's main entrance early in the morning; note that the flag was torn in two after a night of powerful winds. Used for a story on divisiveness.
A photo of an all but boundless cornfield in which one lonesome figure stands, looking in the distance. Originally taken for a story on isolation and retreating into nature.
A misty morning photo of a forest's path taken for a story about climate change's effects on our area.
Taken at Falls Park at night for a story on how local musicians adapted to the ongoing pandemic.
The President visited Sioux Falls, and I was able to get a "front row seat" to the motorcade and discuss it in a later story.
