Worked in a team of three to design a railway turntable for a machine design course. SolidWorks was used to model a locomotive based on the LB&SCR E2 class steam locomotive, a frame-supported turntable, the train rails, and the turntable rails. Simulations were conducted on each component and adjustments to the designs were made according to simulation results. For example, when it was discovered that the train wheel was experiencing considerable deformation under load, parameters such as spoke thickness, outer wheel thickness, axle hub thickness, and wheel thickness were considered as possible variables to adjust to produce an optimal wheel design that minimizes weight and cost but maximizes strength. A 38 page final report was submitted for grading at the end of the semester.
This project was completed with three other teammates.
