Dane Discovers Podcast
Reflection
From my interview, I gained a lot more insight than my written sources offered. I was able to ask specific questions that I otherwise wouldn;’t have answers for. I could ask questions like how do reduce stress levels for the animals here, what are the steps to foster, and what volunteer work is available to do? I also learned some of the behind the scenes stuff such as how a lot of their money is raised. Angel, the person I interviewed, explained that people can donate things such as fine china, furniture, and all sorts of these things. Watermelon Mountain Ranch then sells those donated items to thrift stores or pawn shops to raise funds for the shelter. Angel was also kind enough to take me on a tour of the facility to show me the living spaces and how they take care of the animals. In general, my written sources only gave me the surface info while this interview allowed me to see the background, framework, and the environment of shelters. I felt like my interview went great. There were a couple times where there was a little bit of an awkward silence, but once the interview got rolling it became more natural to speak with each other. I don’t think I could have done anything differently because I got all of my questions answered and then some. I also got a tour of the facility which was amazing. I got to meet some of the animals and I also took some photos for my presentation. Angel also gave me flyers and forms that I can show to the class. When considering how to re-present my interview, I took into consideration who my audience was. They are young adults just like me who enjoy listening to people talk rather than to just read a whole paper. It is way more interesting and engaging to listen to a conversation than to read a bland essay lecturing them about what they should do. Although I had to cut most of my interview out of my podcast to meet the time requirements, I included the portion of my interview that discusses how the community can help the shelter out. This is great because it helps spread the word to young people who are hungry to help fight for what's right and to help make a positive impact in the world. Overall this project is not what I expected. I was very nervous about this project and scared for how I was going to handle it. I was dreading to do the interview but in the end, it was not as bad as I thought. It got me out of my comfort zone and boosted my confidence. If I was able to do this project that I thought was going to be out of my capabilities, I can handle what's coming next.
